Lectures and Workshops

I love sharing the knowledge I've gained as a Consulting Archivist, especially in how family historians and genealogists can use the same techniques on their own collections. We spend so many hours doing the research, why not learn how to spend a few to organize, describe and share it?

I'm happy to present to groups small and large. Whether you're part of a Genealogy Society, a Lineage Society, a Historical Society, a Library, a home school group or any other group interested in learning about how to care for and handle material of historic value, I'll look forward to discussing how I can become one of your program presenters.

Testimonial:

"Last night we (DCGS) received an EXCELLENT presentation from Laura Cosgrove Lorenzana on preserving your genealogy collection...Laura was energetic, engaged the audience to participate, and I can not say enough about the quality of her slides and her expertise in this area.  It was too bad that we did not have enough time for her to answer all of the questions from the audience.  I would highly endorse Laura for any future presentations that you might be considering."

Writing

I can provide articles for both print and digital use; websites, newsletters, journals, and magazines as well as acting as a guest blogger.  You can see my blog, or the articles I've written for Archives.com's Expert Series for examples of my work.

Research

I've been performing research for a very long time - for genealogical purposes about 16 years. I can help you with research in the following counties in Illinois: Kane, DuPage, Kendall, LaSalle, Lake and Cook. Obviously, Chicago has a vast array of remarkable historical repositories, many of which are not usually seen as having genealogical use. My work as an Archivist has provided me with access to some repositories not otherwise available to the public.

How Else Can I Help You?

I can work with materials in a wide range of languages including Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, and Italian. I have done on-site research for myself and clients in Ohio and Michigan; I have performed on-line research using repositories and resources in England, Europe, Poland and Brazil.

Paleography is something I have studied; if you have handwritten documents you are unable to read, I may be able to help you.

If you'd like to find out if I can help you, please don't hesitate to
contact me. A consultation is always free.
